For the most part, sneakerholics living in the U.S. feel like they have the advantage when it comes to many sneaker drops. While this is mostly true, there are times when some of the incredible shops overseas put out something that makes the folks on this side of the pond quite jealous. Case in point, September 2011 when Crooked Tongues put together a special look on the Nike Air Max 90.
Nike Air Max 90 Hyperfuse “Infrared” uploaded by Mr. Will
As one of Nike‘s most recognizable silhouettes in the Nike catalog, Crooked Tongues went with a new school approach over the classic Infrared colorway. Though Hyperfuse was already available on other silhouettes, the CT x Air Max 90 “Infrared” was one of the first times that the material moved form a performance silhouette to a lifestyle silhouette. The new material was not only lighter than previous materials, but also represented a step into the new world for the sneaker.
Making the sneaker even more desirable, the shoe was extremely limited and initially released at the annual Crooked Tongues BBQ. Even then, the sneaker wasn’t just released to the public. If you happened to attend the BBQ, which was in the UK, you had to tweet a picture of what shoes you were wearing, along with the #ctnswbbq2011 hashtag. Winners were chosen at random, and for better or worse, they were the only people in the world with the shoe for two weeks. The second release involved a similar giveaway, where people from all over the world had the opportunity to share their best Nike’s through various Social Media networks and Crooked Tongues gave away two pair a day for a week.
With such history behind them, it was only a matter of time before the sneaker made it to the general public. The bad part, was that it was a year later than the initial release at the BBQ. Also it of course did not include the special insoles that showed the date of the CT BBQ as well as specially labeled box. Despite this small delay, the sneaker sold well and the Tinker designed Nike Air Max 90 “Infrared” remains as one of the most popular shoes from the 90s, in any form, as well as one of the most owned shoes on the Sneakpedia universe.
