If by chance you haven’t noticed Jordan Brand has made 2013 the year of the Air Jordan 5. They have given back to us highly sought after OG colorways like the famed “Fire Reds” and upcoming never-retroed “Laneys.” As well we have seen some new special releases including last week’s “Doernbecher” Air Jordan 5 and this weekend’s new 3lab5 incarnation. The latter being a new premium release very different from the general line and similar to the previous Premio BIN 23 program. One of our favorite BIN 23 builds was the Air Jordan 5 model.

The BIN 23 program was a luxurious overhaul of some of MJ’s signature models that for some reason never hit the market. The quality of the product excelled above the regular releases not only in materials used but in the packaging and quality. The Air Jordan 5 BIN 23 stood out for a number of different reasons, making it highly sought after even amongst the other BIN 23 models. If you just hear the official colorway of Black/Black-Metallic Silver you might think this is the normal black build but never before has the sneaker upper been made up solely of leather and high quality leather at that. Small details like stitching the side 23 to black, using leather on the side panel vents and the special BIN 23 red wax seal in the back ensure that even the layman know this as a special version.
Another big change is the addition of white laces, featured because Jordan aficionado Alex Meacham was asked to put input the design. Meacham remembered one playoff game where MJ swapped to white laces, so that important detail was added to this version as well.
The special wooden Jordan shoe trees were added along with the matching BIN 23 bag to complete the special treatment from start to end. And to finish it all off the Air Jordan 5 BIN 23 was released on Friday February 18th, one day after Michael Jordan’s birthday, the kickoff of the 2011 NBA All-Star weekend and during the same time the Air Jordan 2011 was introduced. With only 2,133 pairs made for the world, this is one AJ5 not often seen. Did you get your hand on a pair? Where do these rank amongst all the Air Jordan 5 releases?
