Sneaker Spotlight: adidas Stan Smith II “Kermit the Frog”

adidas Stan Smith II "Kermit the Frog" Script

When you think of the famous Muppet gang, there are two characters that stand out more than the others, Kermit the Frog and Miss Piggy. Back in 2006, adidas created the adidas Stan Smith II “Kermit”, a dedication to the timeless character that we all knew as children. Bathed in a green upper, the shoes served as a great launch of the Stan Smith II campaign. First introduced back in 1955, Kermit is one of the few puppets that is featured across Sesame Street as well as the regular Muppets specials. Rumors have it that Jim Henson created the first Kermit character out of a discarded spring coat belonging to his mother and two ping-pong ball halves for eyes. 0, Though Henson died in 1990, Kermit continues on as the leader of sorts for the Muppets and the love interest, for better or worse, of Miss Piggy.

Released alongside a Trimm Dich, Tron, Miss Piggy, Betty Boop, and Mr. Happy version of the shoe, the adidas Stan Smith II “Kermit” was an early favorite for sneakerholics. The rich green upper played perfectly to the new adicolor campaign launched by adidas and the Stan Smith II was the perfect canvas. More of a trainer than a tennis shoe, the Stan Smith II featured a white liner to mimic the white eyelets and liner, finishing off the design with one of Kermit’s famous saying on the heel, “It’s not easy bein’ green.” Adidas took the time to make sure it got the details right on the collaborative shoe as well and included a Kermit lace dubrae as well as a “Fairway Green” felt heel that resembles the actual puppet. Finally, adidas included drawing of Kermit on the insole in various stages and the full drawing of Kermit on the lateral midfoot section. As a nice touch, adidas even included Kermit the Frog tissue paper.

Being released back in 2006, the adidas Stan Smith II “Kermit”is pretty hard to find in deadstock condition, though we are sure if you wanted a pair bad enough you could find one. It would be interesting to see a retro of the shoe in the way that collaborations are done today. A nice looking lifestyle sneaker that hints are Kermit instead of overly banking on his color scheme. A sneakerholic can dream can’t he?
