Although there has been attention as of late to the “Shanghai” Nike SB Dunk Low that recently retroed in very limited quantities, we decide to focus on the second incarnation. Released in September of 2005 the build was a sequel to that original Dunk released the previous year. And just like the previous version this one was also designed by Runyo Chen.

Runyo was the perfect person to design the Shanghai inspired Dunks. He was already part of the Nike family and from China, so the connection was very simple. Very different from the first, the Shanghai 2 stood out on its own as well. The biggest feature of the design was the addition of the cross stitching across the middle panel, the first amongst any Nike SB product at that time. The upper was created to resemble the look of a traditional Chinese steaming vessel seen at Dim Sum restaurants around the world. This is achieved by the textured straw panel mixed with the brown distressed leather. Completing the look is a special tongue tag with bowl and chopsticks design.
Earth toned down to the sole the look stood out on its own. The original Shanghai Dunk Low SB might be getting the recent attention but this second version may be the most unique of the two and one of many great Dunks from the Nike SB pink box era.
