Though it seems as if it was just yesterday, the Van x Supreme x Bad Brains Collection that dropped in 2008 turns five years old later this month. The collection, done in tandem with Bad Brains, an eclectic Rastafarian band that was started back in the late 70s/early 80s, featured the SK8-Hi done up in a red, green, and yellow make-up. While it may be easy to make the connections between Bad Brains and the SK8-Hi based on the color choices, the collaboration represented another step in the deep rooted connection between music and the skate culture. Though music is often a part of the pre-performance ritual of most sports, the bond between action sports, like skating, and music, reaches into the depths of the sport and is often integrated with the performance on a personal level.

By 2008, Supreme had quite a few collaborations under its belt. The “hype” as many would say, was really growing with the brand and they were reaching outside of their typical audience with their work with other artists, actors, and musicians. Bad Brains, often called the founding fathers of the Hardcore Punk movement, were a perfect fit for the Supreme audience and the bright colors fit their attitude as well. With the sneakers given most of the attention, many #sneakerholics often forget that the collection was accompanied by a two jackets and four t-shirts that extended the black, yellow, red, and green color scheme and helped to fortify the collaboration.
The Van x Supreme x Bad Brains Collection featured the SK8-Hi with suede uppers, a black leather logos, black accents, and white outsoles. It made its official debut on April 24th, 2008, at Supreme LA and NY, while a Japan release was scheduled shortly after. Nearly 5 years old the wikipedia only has the red colorway at the moment and is missing both the yellow and green builds. We are hoping some great #sneakerholics can help us to add them to the archives.
