Sneaker Spotlight: Bodega x Reebok Pump Omni Lite

Bodega x Reebok Pump Omni Lite

When it comes to sneaker collaborations with retailers, much of the hype around the release is based on the inspiration for the shoe as well as the silhouette itself. Back in 2007, Bodega introduced the world to the Reebok Pump Omni Lite “Escape Pack”. The Pump was limited to only 100 pieces and came bundled with a toothbrush, lighter, lucky rabbit’s foot, stickers, a fortune cookie, hand sanitizer, and a bottle opener; all things needed for an overnight trip. Additionally, one lucky person could win a 5-panel cap, matching t-shirt, mixtapes, and a chance to win a GOLDEN TICKET, which gave one person airfare to anywhere in the continental US. Needless to say, the limited availability and the swag associated with the release made it a hot topic in the sneaker world. Continue reading

Sneaker Showcase: Nike Air Yeezy

Nike Air Yeezy

Released on April 6th, 2009, the Nike Air Yeezy marked the company’s first true signature sneaker with a non-athlete. The Air Yeezy was the first Nike signature model for Kanye West, “the voice of this generation.” Coming out in very limited quantities, this pair of kicks truly marked a new influx of #sneakerholics. Not only did it bring in the fans of one of the more popular rappers of this century, but it also added a shift in style for Nike in their direction of their Sportswear line. Nike adding an artist to their signature line allowed them to branch out the Sportswear series to feature more emphasis to form and style instead of function. The color palette, placement, and use of materials helped to mark these sneakers as a timeless classic; the higher retail price point also set a standard for high fashion footwear.

Sneaker Showcase: Nike SB Dunk “Money Cat” Pack

Nike SB Dunk "Money Cat" Pack

2007 was another popular year for the Nike SB line. Nike SB has experimented with several concepts, materials, and themes over its lifetime and that year we saw a big hit when they released the three sneaker “Money Cat” pack. The last time they released a pack using the Dunk Low, Mid and High was for their  “Three Bears” pack. This time their theme was centered on the Maneki Neko; the money cat. The money cat is a very popular and familiar figure in Japanese culture. The money cat is said to bring the person who owns or wears the figure good luck. So for these sneakers we see the tongue and other areas having logos and stitched on sayings like, “Get that money” and “Feeling lucky.”  Bringing life to this pack were the duo of James Keoni Arizumi and Triplett who created the look for all three models. Though they have gotten increasingly popular in the last couple of years, brands and local retailers have been collaborating as long as we can remember. Back in 2008, Boston-based shop, Bodega, reached deep into the adidas archives for a unique take on the ZX 8000. For those unfamiliar with the silhouette, the ZX 8000 was originally introduced back in 1989 and has been re-released quite a few times since then. Fans of the model include those that ar truly runners, as the shoe was one of the premier running shoes when it was originally launched. Released for both men and women, the adidas ZX 8000 has stood the test of time and the OG colorway still stands strong, even in today’s market of crazy colors.  Continue reading
