Feeling tired? Feeling a little under the weather? As the average #sneakerholic, one grows weary of the many “trend” shoes that seem to slightly miss the point of why we love the classics. Well, the doctor is in and he’s here to check up on you, reminding you of what it means to be one of the meanest, nastiest Slam Dunk Champions the NBA has ever seen. On this day in 1950, Julius Erving was brought into this world, quite possibly to tear down every rim he saw. The history this man has made and what his impact to the sport of basketball was recognized by being inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 1993. What he brought to sneaker history seems to go hand in hand with the Star Chevron, making Converse the name brand it is today.
Back in the 1970s, Converse had dominated the sneaker market with basketball players, being the official footwear for the NBA. “Dr. J” was the cover man, leading the way in the classic silhouette Pro Leather. He indoctrinated the ABA and later NBA with his famous dunks and sky-defying flights, making him one of the most exciting players in the league. Fans craving for a time when the NBA Slam Dunk contest was more exciting, look back at the standard that Erving set with his free throw line dunk which has become an expectation for contestants. The only player to have been voted MVP by both the NBA and ABA, he holds Championship Titles with both leagues as well in a career of basketball spanning two decades.

Converse has paid tribute to the legend that once reigned as the cover man for their company, releasing the First String Dr. J Pro Leather. Dropped on August 5th, 2011, the sneaker was limited to only 168 pairs. Hardly a #sneakerholic couldn’t possibly attribute these kicks without calling them the “Dr. J’s”. Converse First String is the brand’s higher end collection, thought to bring a quality and craftsmanship that represents the care and production of each sneaker. Converse paying tribute to their front man during their biggest impact in the NBA is only fitting. Remembering what he’s done for the league and the way he’s shaped basketball aren’t the only things timeless. The kicks he rocked during his time will always be remembered as the “Dr. J’s”, no matter what Converse may say.
