Sneaker Showcase – Happy Birthday Charles Barkley

Charles Barkley and Michael Jordan

Once known as “The Round Mound of Rebound”, Charles Barkley or “Chuck” has taken center stage, prolonging his career in basketball at the announcer’s table. First of all, today Charles will be celebrating his 50th birthday and the @Sneakerpedia team would like to help recognize his contributions to the sneaker world. Never willing to hide an opinion no matter how brutally honest it may be, Charles’ career on the court is equally just as legendary. His time spent with the Philadelphia 76ers, Phoenix Suns, and Houston Rockets have left memorable moments in each stop, shaking up the basketball world with his power play and proficiency in getting rebounds.

Never known to tower over people (listed at 6 ft 6 in and weighing in at 302 pounds coming into the 1984 NBA Draft), he’s always shown that basketball isn’t just a big man’s game. His propensity to use his weight to gain his advantage over players instead of his height is what’s allowed him to have such a long NBA life. With career averages of 22.1 ppg and 11.7 rpg, it’s no surprise that in 2006, he was voted into the Basketball Hall of Fame. Being able to dominate the game without towering anyone in height is impressive in itself, but to span that average over 16 years is the most impressive feat. Though he never won an NBA Championship (thank to Michael Jordan), he can add winning the NBA Most Valuable Player award and two Olympic Gold Medals to his accolades.

Nike’s “I am not a role model” advertisement with Charles spoke volumes to the type of player he was and person he is today. The famous “Godzilla vs. Barkley” posters highlighted his monstrous personality and demonstrative attitude on the court. From the Nike Air Force 180, Nike Air Force Max, Aix Max CB, Air Max 2 CB, and Air Max CB34, the great shoes he wore are still getting new release and new colorways every year. Be sure to check them out below #sneakerholics and let us know which of “Sir Charles” kicks that you love and which one’s you find “turrible”.
