adidas House of Mutombo advertisement courtesy of Mis ZapasWhen it comes to sneakers, more often than not, it’s a player’s offensive ability that earns him the coveted signature sneaker line. However, one of the exceptions to that is none other than legendary shot-blocker Dikembe Mutombo.

After showcasing his defensive ability at Georgetown, Dikembe Mutombo was drafted 4th overall by the Denver Nuggets in 1991. Mutombo instantly became one of the most feared big men in the game and after wearing Nike early his first season, adidas offered Dikembe Mutombo every player’s dream, his own signtature line, beginning with the adidas Mutombo in 1992. It was wearing the adidas Mutombo that Dikembe earned his first All-Star Game appearance. Mutombo’s infamous “finger wag” became his signature move after sending an opponent’s shot attempt in the opposite direction. The list of names that were on the receiving end of a Mutombo blocked shot includes some of the greatest players ever like Charles Barkley, Alonzo Mourning, Kobe Bryant and Michael Jordan.

With that said, we’re lucky to have the original adidas Mutombo on the wiki in two of the four colorways originally released. We are still looking for the elusive adidas Mutombo II (seen below in a battle with rival Shawn Kemp) to be uploaded to the wiki, so please let us know if you can help out with an upload and enjoy some of Dikembe Mutombo’s greatest blocked shots in the video below. Today Mutombo turns 46, happy birthday to the shot-blocking legen.
