Larry Bird of the Boston Celtics, also known as Larry Legend, was exactly that on the court but the trash-talking sharp-shooter is also remembered for one of the greatest sneaker marketing campaigns of all-time, the Converse “Choose Your Weapon” campaign alongside rival Magic Johnson. 25 years ago today one of the greatest players in NBA History added another unforgettable moment to his list of accomplishments.

Near the end of Game 5 of the Eastern Conference Finals, Bird stole an inbounds pass from Detroit’s Isaiah Thomas, made an over the shoulder pass to a cutting Dennis Johnson for the winning basket as the Celtics pulled out an unbelievable  108-107 victory over the Pistons. On his feet was the classic Converse Weapon in the simple black and white colorway Larry Bird wore in the Choose Your Weapon commercials.

One of the most important shoes in the history of sneakers, the Converse Weapon helped bring attention to the footwear of NBA athletes like never before. Is this classic sneaker a part of your collection?
