Sneaker Showcase: Happy Birthday Andre Agassi

Andre Agassi

Although John McEnroe was Nike’s original bad boy of tennis, no American player was more responsible for making the game and tennis sneakers popular as Andre Agassi. Recently inducted into the Tennis Hall of Fame, Agassi changed both tennis sneakers and apparel with his vibrant colors and flair for fashion.

The lucky recipient of his own signature line, the Challenge series, Agassi was similar to Michael Jordan in that his kicks also were released with a variety of matching apparel. Something that wasn’t as common back in the day as it is nowadays.

Agassi’s reign in tennis and footwear came during a time period that cross-training was becoming the norm. Not only were his sneakers often available in mid and 3/4 cuts, he also wore many other cross trainers in his career as well. It was no surprise to see the star rock other sneakers like Air Trainer 1’s or Nike Huaraches.
