After a season opening series in Japan between the Seattle Mariners and the Oakland A’s, Major League Baseball kicks off the 2012 season with a the Cardinals and Marlins opening the regular season tonight and a majority of the teams beginning tomorrow. With that in mind, we decided to take a look through the wiki and find our five favorite baseball retro models.

Baseball inspired shoes have remained a big part of sneaker enthusiast’s collections thanks to a handful of athletes. Bo Jackson, Deion Sanders and Ken Griffey Jr helped create memorable kicks with their on-field performance and of course, Nike’s ingenius marketing abilities. In recent years these baseball inspired sneakers have returned in retro form giving fans the chance at finally adding them to their collections.

The Nike Diamond Turf II created for Deion Sanders (pictured above) returned this year and was welcomed by collectors thanks to it’s classic colors. The Nike Griffey Max 1 retro released in many colors but the “Emerald” colorway evoked memories of “The Kid” wearing the alternate teal Mariners jerseys back in the late 90s, and the “Cincinnati” inspired colorway, quickly became a must-have for its Red, White and Black color combo.

The Air Max NM, which originally released as the Air Max Nomo was worn by Japanese pitching sensation Hideo Nomo while he played for the Los Angeles Dodgers. The Tech Grey and Blue Spark colorway was not an original but easily one that Nomo could have worn, making it one of the most popular of the Air Max NM retros.

Whether Deion Sanders was on the baseball diamond or the football field, he seemed to always have fresh kicks on. The Nike Air Diamond Turf has re-released a number of times but in 2010-2011, new colorways were introduced and the Red, Black and White version caught the eye of many sneaker enthusiasts.
