Up until recently it was unheard for non-athletes to be signed to sneaker contracts or even having strong ties with the manufacturers. That is except for one man, Spike Lee. The director/actor/producer etc. is better known by sneaker enthusiasts by his alter ego, Mars Blackmon, which has kept him tied closely with Jordan Brand for many years. Creating characters that loved rocking a pair of Air Jordans, as well as ensuring they are crispy clean, Spike has the pleasure of having his face seen on the heel of the retro Air Jordan 4, countless commercials and his very own special sneaker, the Jordan Spiz’ike.

Taking elements from the Air Jordan 3, 4, 5, 6 and 20, the Jordan Spiz’ike was created to commemorate Spike Lee’s Mars Blackmon character and the many years of his relationship with Jordan. The hybrid sneaker took elements from the sneakers worn by Michael during some of his most successful years. Times in which he won Slam Dunk Championships, MVP awards, Championship rings and much, much more. Initially set to be a limited edition sneaker, the popularity of the model has made it a mainstay of the Jordan Brand catalog since it initially released.

In 2011, Jordan Brand created two special New York Knicks inspired colorways of the sneaker that have been some of the most popular colorways to date.

To celebrate his birthday it wouldn’t be surprising to see Spike at tonight’s game between the New York Knicks and Toronto Raptors at Madison Square Garden, courtside in a fresh pair of J’s, quite possibly the Spiz’ike. Happy Birthday to Mr. Lee and thanks for all that you have done for the sneaker culture.
