When it comes to the most popular athletes in the sneaker world, Michael Jordan is typically at the top of the list but fans of trainers around the world may argue that another star made a bigger impact. Bo Jackson’s “Bo Knows” Nike advertising campaign is one of the most memorable phrases of all time for sports fans and especially for #sneakerholics. As a star on both the baseball diamond and the football field, Bo Jackson was the reason that the Nike Training division of Nike exists today.
Whether he was running down fly balls in the outfield for the Kansas City Royals or running over defensive linemen as a running back for the Los Angeles Raiders, Bo put in the work in the gym and at practice that quickly made him the face of training shoes from Nike. Being a two-sport star helped launch an entirely new line of cross training sneaker designs like the Nike Trainer, Nike Trainer SC, and many others.
To show off Mr. Jackson’s diverse skill set, the Bo Knows campaign ran throughout 1989 and 1990. The commercials promoted the Nike Air Trainer SC and the Nike Air Trainer SC II and showed athletes Michael Jordan, John McEnroe, Wayne Gretzky and others questioning just how much ‘Bo Knows’. The campaign not only launched a lighter side of Bo Jackson, but also has been mimicked countless times in other forms of pop culture. One thing is for certain, over twenty years later, Bo definitely knows sneakers. So today, on his 49th birthday, as our way of saying happy birthday and thank you for the memories, we take a look at some of our favorite Bo Jackson sneakers.
With so many great Nike trainers tied to Bo Jackson’s name, it’s difficult to choose which ones are the best without leaving some out. Since the Nike Air Trainer SC II recently returned, it was a must for the list of top Bo Jackson sneakers. Another one we couldn’t leave out was the original Nike Trainer 1 that helped launch the entire Nike Training category, which is still hugely popular today. Another of our favorites came in the form of the Air Trainer SC 2010, which was made up of baseball glove leather and Bo Knows detailing. The recent Tecmo Bowl Nike Air Trainer II with the image of 8-bit “Tecmo Bo” on the tongue is also a good one for stirring up our favorite Bo Jackson memories.
