Sneaker Spotlight: Air Jordan 3 Black/Cement

Nike Air Jordan 3 Best on Mars, Best on Earth

This weekend one of the greatest sneakers of all time will be returning as a retro. The Air Jordan 3 is nothing short of legendary amongst sneaker enthusiasts but became that way because of the way it became popular with a bigger audience than just #sneakerholics. It was the Nike Air Jordan 3 that reached people from all types of backgrounds and helped start the growth in popularity of sneakers and essentially the sneaker community, as we know it today.

It was designed by Tinker Hatfield for MJ to wear during the 1987-1988 NBA season. Not only was it the first time that Elephant Print was used on the Jordan signature shoes, it was also the first time the world was introduced to one of the most iconic and recognizable logos in the world today, the Jumpman. Along with the amazing design, and unforgettable Mars Blackmon commercials featuring Spike Lee, the Nike Air Jordan 3 was on the feet of Michael Jordan during one of his greatest season’s in the NBA. Michael led the Chicago Bulls to their first winning season in nearly ten years. Although the White and Cement colorway was the shoe MJ made famous on his way to the 1988, flying through the air on the way to a Slam Dunk Contest victory.

The Black and Cement colorway became famous that same weekend when Michael scored 40 points on the way to winning the All-Star Game Most Valuable Player award. Michael continued to wear the Black and Cement colorway of the Air Jordan 3 throughout the remainder of the season and finished as the season’s Most Valuable Player, Defensive Player of the Year and an NBA scoring title.

The first Jordan Retro 3 released in 1994 when Michael returned from his first retirement. It returned as a retro in 2001 and again as a part of the Countdown Pack Collection in 2008. It’s continued to be one of the most popular models and the Black and Cement colorway is especially popular amongst sneaker enthusiasts, any time it releases.
