Sneaker History: Nike Be True To Your School Dunks

Nike Be True To Your School Dunks

In 1985 Nike launched one of their most legendary campaigns ever with a collection of sneakers and apparel designed for 7 of the schools they were providing equipment for. Michigan, UNLV, Villanova, Syracuse, Kentucky, Arizona, and St. John’s were all set up with team colorways of the now famous Nike Dunk. Rumor has it that the new shoes, which were a redesign of the Nike Terminator, were so popular with UNLV that the school actually changed their uniform scheme to match the shoes (sounds like a#sneakerholics problem, right?).

Over the years the “Be True To Your School” colorways have become legendary in the world of sneaker enthusiasts. The BTTYS pack would return after that first launch in 1985, but not until the year 1999. It was with their return that the Nike Dunk quickly became one of the most popular silhouettes for sneaker lovers. The versatility of the shoe helped it find its way into other subcultures, like skateboarding.

Hard to believe that it was six years ago this month that we last saw the Be True To Your School Pack retro. It was slightly different in 2005, because it fell under the Nike Skateboarding brand. Wearing ‘Nike SB’ branding on the tongue and the classic team colorways from the originals, the BTTYS Pack once again was in high demand as it released in limited quantities throughout the United States. Making it even more sought after was the fact that the colorways, for the most part, released only in regions near the schools that inspired them in 1985.

The BTTYS designs have become one of the most recognizable sneakers ever. They have lived as both basketball shoes and skateboard shoes, inspired art from some of the brilliant creative minds in the sneaker community, and will always be remembered for helping to launch one of the most popular sneakers of all time.

  1. I just posted my own Dunk History last week: http://www.sneakoholic.com/105-dunk-history-the-story-of-the-nike-dunks/

With the same old ad too.

But you’ve outdone me in depth. To be honest I’m not so much of a Dunk Man, but I’ve got respect for the classics.
