As if anyone needed another excuse to drink more beer, today, August 5th, is officially International Beer Day. It also, so happens to fall on a Friday, so the timing is perfect to start the weekend off right. To commemorate the day we decided to highlight one of the most famous beer-inspired sneakers. The folks at Nike SB love to enjoy a brew or two, as over the years they have created a few Dunk Lows inspired by a variety of beers, but the most famous shoe is the Heineken inspired version.
Released back in 2003, a lot of controversy surrounded the shoe, as it was not an official licensed product from Heineken. This led to a cease-and-desist order which resulted in the shoes being pulled from the shelves. Never naming Heineken as reason behind the design, Nike simply stated that the shoe was inspired after the fine people of Holland.
Using a base created from a combination of Classic Green and White, a Black swoosh adds balance to the shoe’s upper region. Red laces were added to the shoes and also used for the branding on the tongue and heel. But the cherry on the cake is the addition of the Red star onto the heel, which is incredibly close to the Heineken label.
Due to their limited numbers and storied history, the shoe is highly sought after and still fetch a hefty price on the sneaker market. One of the best non-official beer sneakers ever created, the shoe helped create the market for other alcohol collaborations being created. Besides the “Heinkeken” Dunk Low, what are your favorite beer-inspired sneakers? Let us know in the comment section below and on the Twitter account. Also, don’t forget to enjoy a beer today.
